Research objectives and content
The aim of this work is to develop formal models and tools for the specification of work flows and their supporting information systems for manufacturing business processes on the basis of requirements provided by business users, and to propose a methodology for their analysis and development. This work will concern both modelling and optimisation of business processes based on a work flow model and an information system specification method. Formal models of work flows are required to control, or at least monitor, the execution of business processes and their evolution in a changing environment, while formal models of information systems are required to design and implement the necessary databases for their
execution. This work will also concern work flow model's mapping into routines and transactions to be executed on underlying databases. Therefore the approach will cover functional and information aspects of business processes. Expected results of the project include: ? a forma model for work flow specification in the context of integrated manufacturing;
? a modelling methodology, which lends itself to incremental change of process models;
? a prototype of a supporting tool for work flow design and enactment. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
? Give to the applicant a more industrial and interdisciplinary perspective, applying theoretical results obtained with formal specification techniques to manufacturing systems (see applicant's CV and the description of host institution).
? Studying methods to qualitative and quantitative analysis of work flows. ? Give to the applicant more practical experience on object-oriented databases, especially on r2, and manufacturing systems (see the description of host institution).

From an industrial perspective, business process analysis, design and optimisation are crucial issues for organisation analysis of CIM systems. Their specification and implementation are critical factors in building CIM systems and constrain the design of their necessary information systems.
