Development of high quality engineering materials based on natural fibre composites by optimising the interface characteristics

Ziel

Research objectives and content
The interfacial properties need to be explored in order to optimise the strength and toughness of composite materials. This project aims to study the interface in composites manufactured from (waste) thermoplastic resins such as PP, PBT, PET,PE, PS etc. and (waste) lignocellulose fibres such as cotton, wood, flax, sisal etc. in order to optimise the mechanical behaviour of these materials for a potential usage in engineering applications. Surface treatment of the fibres will be performed to alter adhesive properties, then the fibres and matrix will be characterised taking into consideration the chemical, physical and mechanical adhesion. The interface between fibre and polymeric matrix will be characterised by micromechanical testing in single fibre, monolayer and bulk composites. Finally the transcrystallinity around the fibre and its effect on the interface will be studied.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Working on this project will be very helpful for the training of the applicant, since she will be able to acquire valuable experience in scientific areas such as physical, chemical and mechanical characterisation of composite materials. She would be also very helpful for her country, since Greece needs well trained and qualified scientists especially in fields where modern technologies with respect towards the environment are involved.
