Interplay between single particle and collective excitations in superdeformed nuclei in the mass 190 region

Ziel

Research objectives and content
The subject of this TMR project is the study of nuclear structure at extreme conditions in deformation and rotation. Taking advantage on recent results obtained with the large spectrometers EUROGAM II and GAMMASPHERE several questions concerning the structure of superdeformed (SD) nuclei remain unsolved. More precisely, in the mass 190 region, the collective degree of freedom of SD nuclei has been put forward. Moreover, in the same mass region, the excitation energies and spins of the SD states in several nuclei have been measured through the study of the transitions linking these SD states to the normal (ND) states. Concerning the collective excitations some experimental measurements are proposed to constraint the theoretical calculations aiming to describe this new degree of freedom (the case of 198Pb SD nucleus is put forward as an example). Concerning the single particle excitation in SD nuclei, a detailed analysis of the discrete and the statistical quasicontinous part of the decay of the SD bands in a odd proton system is proposed . Such an analysis, for which the NBI nuclear structure group have performed a pioneer work, should reveal the influence of the intrinsic SD states on the decay out mechanism.
