Microporous carbons for gas storage and delivery

Ziel

Research objectives and content
The purpose of this project is to improve the development of microporous carbons for gas storage. Microporous carbon monoliths can provide a high adsorption capacity at room temperature and low pressure (3-4 MPa). The present project will involve four steps. The first step consists in optimizing the porous structure of three new types of carbon monoliths (from wood waste materials, carbon fibres and paper-derived carbons) in order to maximize the volumetric capacity of gas adsorption. Usual methods will be used to characterize the produced carbon materials in terms of their adsorption capacity. High pressure methane adsorptive capacity will be then determined for the most promising materials. The third step is devoted to the building of an apparatus in the aim of measuring deliverable capacity of the carbons under heat transfer conditions. The final step is to develop monolith forms which will be suitable for incorporation into vehicle fuel storage assemblies.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The aim of the present project, carried out in the Carbon Materials Research Group (Bath University), is to optimize microporous carbon monolith properties. The combination of Bath University knowledge and investigation techniques plus my own scientific experience should lead to develop novel monolithic carbons, suitable for adsorbed natural gas.
