Dielectric and magnetic properties of magnetic liquids, as two-phase dispersions

Ziel

Research objectives and content
Magnetic fluids are dispersions of magnetic nanoparticles in a carrier liquid. They consist an important novel class of materials, which finds a wide variety of industrial and biomedical applications and is of increasing technological interest. Aim of the project is to study the dependance on the microstructure (chain-formation, agglomeration) of the magnetic and dielectric properties of dispersions. Ferrofluids are unique in offering the possibility to alter the topology in a continuous way through an external macroscopic parameter (magnetic field). The results of broadband dielectric and magnetic spectroscopy (DC to 2GHz) at temperatures down to -100rC will be compared with numerical simulations, morphological studies (X-ray diffractometry) and effective medium theories. We expect to enhance the theoretical unterstanding of the correlation between topology and effective properties of ferrofluids and two-phase suspensions in general. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Both the experimental and the theoretical/numerical part of the project will be conducted by me, as a part of the requirements for a doctorate. I consider this as a unique opportunity to train in many aspects of basic and applied research. I will have the opportunity to work with state-of -the-art equipment and techniques in the field of spectroscopy and novel-material science. The benefit from the excellent experience of the host group should be underlined.
