Research objectives and content
Metal-nitrido compounds are species which have important properties either in organic synthesis or in materials chemistry. Although nitride compounds of main group elements have extremely desirable properties (e.g. great hardness, thermal shock Ability, wide variation in electronic properties, corrosion and oxidation resistance), molecular nitride complexes are rare in main group metals chemistry and there are few obvious routes to synthesise them. The aim of this proposal is the investigation of systematic synthesis of main group metal nitrido complexes and to explore the structures and reactivities of these species. In addition, in related studies we will examine the preparation and coordination chemistry of the isoelectronic oxide complexes. Studies will focus of Group 13, 14 and 15 metals.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The Chemistry Department in Cambridge is one of the most important European research centres in Chemistry. During my stay there I expect to finish the work that I have started in Main Group chemistry. The experience gained in Cambridge, together with that obtained during my PhD, in Transition Metals chemistry, would encompass a very broad spectrum of ideas. well the research proposed will involve a large range of analytical techniques, knowledge and expertise in these techniques, combined with the synthetic background, would place me in an advantage position in terms of future jobs prospects.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The unique properties of main group nitrido and oxide compounds has resulted in very important applications in the electronic industry. The Wright group has several industrial collaborations and it is hoped to develop the potential applications of the compounds prepared through these contacts.
