European resource for the social sciences

Obiettivo

The Study Panel on Access to Large Scale Facilities for the Social Sciences report stressed the need for greater co-ordination and exploitation of existing large scale facilities Strengthened co-operation between complementary establishments was seen as necessary to improve the training capacity for European comparative social research. In this spirit the Institute for the Social Sciences at Essex (ISS) and Norsk Samfunnsvitenskapelig Datatjeneste in Bergen (NSD) with Zentralarchiv in Cologne (ZA) and are working together to facilitate access to data and empirical research training within a supportive environment. The Institute for the Social Sciences at the University of Essex conducts and facilitates the empirical study of social and economic change by integrating longitudinal and cross-national European datasets, providing the support services required for their analyses, and acting as the host for major substantive research programmes. We request support for a programme of visiting fellows who will conduct their own research as well as participate in major, ongoing interdisciplinary research projects. The Institute co-ordinates six well established social science units at the University of Essex. These consist of a data archive, training facilities and research centres.
Large Scale Facility funds will provide 2000 extra researcher/days per year to researchers located outside of Essex. This will increase the scale of activity within the Institute by approximately 20%.
