Traineeship for electronic publishing

Obiettivo

The overall objective of the proposed traineeship, apart from its obvious contribution to the creation of a critical mass of expertise in the use of electronic publishing technology in the area of information content industry, is also the demonstration of the use of training activities to trigger the transfer of RTD results to the industry.

The know-how and technology at the centre of the proposed traineeship, are the results achieved within the NEWSPAD (9252) and the DIDOS (R2037) projects. NEWSPAD is an ESPRIT project in the multimedia consumer market area. Its objective is to design and implement a multimedia news broadcasting system, where the information is disseminated via digital communication, and delivered through portable multimedia devices. Broadcasted information includes news, entertainment, education and advertising. However, for the sake of simplicity the term "multimedia newspaper" will be used hereafter. DIDOS is a RACE project aiming to specify and realise distributed applications for the production of technical documentation, based on a Service Centre Concept.

The proposing consortium consists of a technology development company, an academic and research organisation, and a "user" organisation, with expertise in change management. The trainees will come from the information publishing and the audio/visual business. During the traineeship, the publishing business should be analysed and the preparation of a generic change plan should be used as a mechanism for the knowledge capture. The implementation of a "multimedia newspaper" demonstration pilot should be used as the main route by which the knowledge could be put to use for the benefit of industry.

The specific knowledge that will be gained by the trainees, is:

- strong management experience in the Information Content Industry;
- highly advanced knowledge of new and emerging technology;
- ability to synthesise technology, extract problems and frame in technological terms.

For the consortium, the benefits are to gain feedback by the trainees concerning the commercial exploitation of their RTD results as well as to promote the early adoption of this technology in the publishing sector. For the trainees, the benefits are to impart the skills necessary to assess and implement the business process and enterprise structure changes necessary to exploit the opportunities offered by the technology know-how. The trainees will gain a technology overview and specific experience in collaborative multimedia authoring using distributed computing environment. After the training the trainees will have the skills to be employed in the domain of electronic publishing or to establish their own business. The level of attainment should be that of in-depth understanding the state of the art technology trends, practical education through their customisation in new electronic publishing methodologies and the efficient set up and use of the tools related with the above topics.

The key features of the training plan should be the understanding of Information Publishing. Specific areas include:

Electronic Publishing and Methodologies in HyperMedia design
Authoring Tools
Resources capturing and editing
Multimedia CD ROM
SGML Editorial System and Editorial Reuse
On-Line Information Services
On-Line Databases
collaborative multimedia authoring
Information Filtering and Smart Agents
"Wire Services"
