Result description: An overview of the AEOLOS methodology, which is designed to support decision-making in the context of EOL treatment of waste, which is assessed from an environmental, social and economic point of view. The methodology does not make decisions for the end-user, but supports the decision-making process through providing a step-by-step process, which begins with the definition of the EOL scenario, make up of product and EOL option(s), and ends with a ranked list of scenarios based on their environmental, social and economic performance. Guidance is provided to the user throughout. The step-by-step approach means that the methodology could be applied to other waste streams with minor adjustments. The methodology is seen to be unique in its combination of all three dimensions of sustainability, allowing the user to assess EOL scenarios within one or between more than one dimension. The overview is presented as information on the AEOLOS service network. What are the potential applications for this result? There are many applications of the overview - the Internet version of the overview can be used as a means for marketing the sale of the software. Who are the end-users of this result? The main end-users of the methodology in isolation of the software are likely to be consultants. The website could be visited by numerous end-users. What are the main innovative features/benefits? - Integration of all three dimensions of sustainability. - Step-by-step approach that allows applicability of the methodology to other waste streams. Current status. Web pages: due for completion end of project. Analysis of the market or application sectors. The overview is available to the general public on the internet, especially targeted at public policy makers and the EEE and WEEE industries. Potential barriers. Lack of awareness and knowledge of AEOLOS website restricting take up. The AEOLOS service network is the principal gateway to the application of the AEOLOS methodology and software tool for WEEE industries and public policy makers.
Result description Prototype of AEOLOS software. What are the potential applications for this result? Decision support tool, with the focus on the treatment of WEEE but also applicable to other fields of waste treatment. Who are the end-users of this result? OEM's, Recycler, Remanufacturer, Public Authorities, Consultants. What are the main innovative features/benefits? Web-based software architecture with the following features / benefits: - Improved performance (by utilization of efficient server architecture) - Flexibility (introduction of a toolbox, allowing flexible module tools) - Portability by usage of web browser (also applicability to mobile services, which use i.e. WAP and SMS ) - Maintenance (updating of software resources only at the server, i.e. replacement of modules) - Resource saving - Open for different standards (i.e. Java, Java Servlet, XML, ) Current status. Prototype: end of project. User Manual: Completed 30 June 2002.Analysis of the market or application sectors. Not known yet. Need to conduct market survey. Potential barriers. Not known yet but value for money (compared to alternatives) is likely to be a consideration. Also partnership with an appropriate software house is critical for exploitation and development of the prototype.
Result description. Public report or textbook about the state of the art of EOL management and list of indicators. What are the potential applications for this result? Inform development of AEOLOS and raise awareness of sustainability indicators. Who are the end-users of this result? Public readers, authorities, industry, students etc. What are the main innovative features/benefits? Assess state of the art of sustainable development. Current status. The material exists as an internal deliverable (D1.2). Analysis of the market or application sectors. Application mainly as a research document for consultants, academia etc. Potential barriers. External publisher. Eventually copyrights from external sources
Result description Detailed description of the AEOLOS methodology, contained in an internal deliverable, and as a handbook of the methodology, for sale to users, either separately or with the software. What are the potential applications for this result? Consulting services, using the methodology. Who are the end-users of this result? Likely to be consultants, and the consortium partners. What are the main innovative features/benefits? - Integration of all three dimensions of sustainability. - Step-by-step approach that allows applicability of the methodology to other waste streams. Current status. Internal deliverable D5.2: completed 31st May 2002 Handbook: completed (4th October 2002). Analysis of the market or application sectors. Need to conduct detailed market survey (to build on pilot survey undertaken during the study). Potential barriers. The methodology could be perceived as too complex, and impact of legislative drivers still unclear.
