Objective The NEDENEF project consists in a precise optimisation of the behaviour of the new high-pressure direct injection (DI) engines regarding the evolution of the fuel formulation. The main objectives of the project are- to increase the knowledge of the impact of conventional fuels on injection characteristics, on combustion process and on engine tuning,- to identify the fuel parameters which are the most relevant,- to select alternative ways for fuels which contribute, and- to reduce drastically the emissions. All the results obtained will concern the regulated pollutants and the unregulated pollutants (toxic compounds, aldehydes, ketones, particulates size). The data collected in this project will be used by car manufacturers to propose new tuning to reach very low levels of emissions and by refiners to produce fuels well adapted for these new DI diesel engines and to anticipate on a new refinery process. The most important outcome are different databases concerning impact of fuel properties:For injection characteristics :Two different injection systems was investigated and a computer model was validated. To understand impact on combustion process, measurements were done with two transparent engines. The mains conclusions concerned oxygenated fuels. They reduce smoke emissions, and present shorter ignition delay and smoother combustion. For engine investigations, pollutant emissions have been measured on seven different engines. Five vehicles have been tested, in term of pollutant emissions. Using these databases, all the results have been analysed with a statistical point of view. For some fuel properties it is now possible to predict its impact on pollutant emissions.
