European high lift programme (EUROLIFT)

Ziel

Present aircraft design methods have to be improved continuously due to environmental and future transport market requirements. Promising results are expected from development of advanced high lift systems for civil transport aircraft. EUROLIFT will develop know-how and tools for an efficient design of such systems. At present the validation of the numerical design of a high lift/low speed system is done with sub-scale aircraft models and final performance of the new aircraft is derived by extrapolation. This extrapolation to a full-scale aircraft poses a high risk in time and money. The accurate prediction of the low speed/high lift performance early in the design process will, therefore, be a key asset in the development of competitive future aircraft. Consequently, EUROLIFT research will:
- perform a number of special experiments to create an experimental data base,
- use the cryogenic very high Reynolds number test facility ETW to bridge the gap between sub-scale testing and flight conditions to understand and incorporate scaling effects,
- employ the database to assess and improve available numerical tools with respect to time effective pre-optimisation and the high accuracy required for industrial applications, and
- combine experimental and theoretical results for enhanced understanding oh high lift flow physics.
