Objective
The Council Directive (89/109/EEC) for food contact materials implies that materials must not transfer their constituents to foods in quantities which could bring about an unacceptable deterioration in organoleptic characteristics thereof. There is no European Standard for the assessment of whether the stipulations in the directive are fulfilled. Moreover, the paper and food industries need the sensory tests for quality assessments of produced or purchased materials and for trade specifications. The aim of this project is to establish a calibration procedure for sensory testing of paper and board materials The first step is to create formulas for calibration samples. The second step is to establish a training procedure for sensory panels on the use of these calibration samples. Finally, an intercomparison test is performed to determine the practical viability of the formulas and training procedure.
