Obiettivo
The aim of the project is to demonstrate that harnessing an extra saline geothermal field for a municipal district heating system by using a central heat exchange facility is technically and economically feasible. The geothermal water is not potable and highly corrosive due to its chemical composition. Water from the well will be piped via a 5.5 km long pre-insulated pipeline to a central heat exchange facility.The heat exchange plant will transfer heat from the saline primary fluid to water enclosed in a closed circuit distribution system. Individual heat exchangers will provide each home with potable tap water by heating freshwater.
Further aims are to replace fossil fuel currently used for space heating, enhance reliability of energy delivery and decrease electrical transmission losses.

Replacing the annual current use of fossil fuel equivalent to 1 MWt for space heating, which corresponds to 2800 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Experience in Iceland has shown that geothermal water with similar chemical composition has beneficial health effects, i.e. for psoriasis patients. At one Icelandic geothermal site, a health care complex, the Blue Lagoon, is based on geothermal water with very similar characteristics. the geothermal water will be used as swimming and/or bathing pool water, which has a significant health benefit potential.
The local employment infrastructure is, currently, unsophisticated. Socio-economical benefits are expected from the availability of hot water from the district heating system, potential health service as mentioned above and increased energy reliability. Experience from other such undertakings in Iceland has shown this to be the case. Moreover, the construction work will provide additional short term employment.
The result may be transferred to other geothermal developments both in Iceland and elsewhere, where the geological conditions are similar.
The use of central heat exchanger facility for a whole town's distribution system to mitigate the corrosive effect of directly circulating the water from the geothermal field, which is highly saline and polluted by sea water. The heat exchanger will be a plate heat exchanger with titanium plates in order to withstand the corrosive effect of the well water.
The use of simple low cost dual pre-insulated plastic pipes for re-circulating the return water in the distribution system.
Based on the following assumptions : Average unit price of energy is 2.94 ISK/kWh.
Comparison to the production cost of conventional installations :
The average electrical energy price from the local utility (RARIK) is 4.30 ISK/kWh.
Annual cost by electrical heating : 27.2 * 10e6 * 4.30 = 116.96 * 10e6 ISK.
Assuming the efficiency of burning equipment to be about 65% the energy cost of heating with fuel oil is 3.75 ISK/kWh.
Annual cost by using fuel oil : 27.2 * 10e6 * 3.75 = 102.0 *10e6 ISK.
