INDUSTRIAL PILOT-PLANT FOR THE BREEDING OF GLASS-EEL IN A CLOSED CIRCUIT SYSTEM WITH THE USE OF WASTE GEOTHERMIC HEAT

Obiettivo

In a moment when water resources are becoming more and more scarce and thus the necessity of controlling effluents increases, the use of closed circuit technologies become more and more important in fish-breeding systems. The aim of the project is to optimise, on the basis of continual testing, an advanced system of biofiltration and water-treatment linked to specific management programs for thermic water-cultivation with system models that can be reproduced for marketing purposes.
During the first period of activity the chief aim has been the optimization of the technological system and the verification of the efficiency limits. The maximum stocking capacity predicted for each unit (5000 Kg.) has been reached while keeping an acceptable quality level of the breeding water. This threshold can be increased by 25-30% through appropriate structural modifications and some technical and management expedients. After having determined these aspects and verified the excellent zootechnic performances of the bred fishes, the final aim has been at making productive the activity of the farm in Castelnuovo Val di Cecina. Since January 1995 several batches of glass-eels have been introduced, carrying out in this way the productive trend which, in the specific context and with the current market situation, is considered essential to achieve good economic results. Because of the small breeding volumes of the plant and of the necessity to keep a convenient number of workersto assure the control and efficiency of the productive process, two new units will come into operation in May 1996, which will allow the production of 38-40 tons of elvers weighing 12-15 gr. The units will be built with the criteria and on the base of the experiences previously acquired, and aim at the maximum process control and at making easier the ordinary management, which in the weaning phases must necessarily include the assiduous presence of specialized personnel.
The project provides for the realization of a modular system consisting of a closed circuit filtration unit linked to the various breeding phases. Basically the unit consists of weaning basins in VTR (vetro resinal) : 2 circular basins with a capacity of 2.5 cubic meters covering a surface of 4,9 square meters, 2 funnel-shaped basins (capacity : 1650 litres) and 8 rectangular above-ground basins in PVC (capacity : 18 cubic meters; surface : 24 square meters).
The production circuit contains two identical, parallel and independent cycles covering a total surface of approximately 1000 square meters.
The same structure provides areas for sanitary and monitoring functions, warehouse space, stockage, product selection which occupy an additional 1000 square meters.
The system of biological filtration is a percolating process preceded by a system of gravity-metric sedimentation and by mechanical filtration for the rapid removal of sedimented and suspended solids. Both system also includean ozonization unit and an oxygenation system as well as indirect heating by geothermic vapour. The installation is designed to recycle water through a series of circuits in order to consent maximum flexibility correlated to water quality which changes in relation to the quantity of the fish, their feed, and their size: that is, to the different amounts of biomass in the breeding cycle. For this purpose the installation is equipped to monitor continuously the principal parameters of the water sampled at different points of the system, in order to permit the immmediate correction or modification of the various water-quality factors.
During the 30 months of demonstration activity, the analyses of computerized data as well as daily and periodical observation data will make in possible to determine the system's best operating conditions in relation to different needs, which, in turn, are correlated to economic and biotechnological evaluation.
