AORTICS will work on an up-to-date telematics system to link medical devices monitoring hospital patients in intensive care and to display all information on a personal computer. One major problem is the multiplicity of information created at a patient's bedside and the need for its efficient integration to enable a better understanding of the patient's condition. The project will therefore test the effectiveness of prototype norms for an appropriate intercommunication system in a real-life hospital environment. It will validate a European operative standard to help companies integrate intercommunication facilities into the devices they manufacture.
At the patient's bedside of an Intensive Care Unit, an enormous amount of information is being generated such as the medical instrumentation data and the medical personnel observations regarding the patient. Actually, all this information is not always being captured, integrated and consequently processed in order to achieve a better understanding of the patient situation. A major technical problem is still the communication between devices.
There is an urgent need to put into work a European standard for Medical Device Inter-communication. This is true for two main reasons: First, big companies, mainly American, have emerged by themselves with proprietary solutions, and an American standard (P1073) is being approved against the opinion of the general European technical criteria. Second, for a very big number of medium or small European manufacturers, the lack of an operative standard, prevents these companies to integrate in their devices the facilities for intercommunication.
The objective of our proposal is to develop, implement, demonstrate and evaluate a practical telematics platform for a Medical Local Network to be used in the Critical Care environment. The main contribution of our work is to create and validate an Open System by implementing the Normalization Works carried out by the European Standardisation Organisation, CEN/TC251 WG5. The prototype will serve to test the norms and as the practical feedback to guarantee that the norms will work in real life situations. The results of this project are expected to be turned into products that can be officially certified by the CEN and add specific values to customers and companies.
This project incorporates as partners norms developers, together with users and developers of medical devices, in order to participate in the very early stages of the norms elaboration. The economical impact in the European scale has been evaluated in the order of 225 Mecus of savings while the increment of competitiveness with other markets will increase exportations.
