The proposed EU Advanced Courses in Computational Neuroscience 2000-2002 will be a continuation of the previous Crete Courses in Computational Neuroscience (1996-1998) and of the 1999 Trieste Course in Computational Neuroscience. Correspondingly, the objective of each event is to train advanced students (typically graduate students and beginning postdocs) in Computational Neuroscience, i.e. in the use of modelling techniques to study the functional organization of the nervous system at many different levels of complexity.

The training will cover the whole field of Computational Neuroscience starting from modelling of membrane biophysics and cell compartments over single-neuron models, models of small and large circuits, to models of attention and motor control at the systems level. The large number of applicants in all former courses (applications were usually a factor of 4 to 5 higher than the number of available places) demonstrated that there is a continuing strong need of training in the multidisciplinary field of Computational Neuroscience, which requires expertise in many scientific disciplines including Neurobiology, Neuromedicine, Psychophysics and Psychology, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science. This need will be satisfied by the proposed courses. Given the tremendous amount of knowledge that has been accumulated in each discipline, a most important feature of the courses will be (i) to select the relevant topics from each discipline, (ii) to present and train the relevant knowledge at the highest level.
