Institute of aquaculture

Obiettivo

Description:

The Institute of Aquaculture is one of the largest institutions devoted to aquaculture science in the world. With over 100 staff the Institute has unrivalled expertise and experience in research leading to the development of sustainable aquaculture systems. Major research areas include disease and health management, reproduction and genetics, nutrition and biochemistry, environmental impact, and aquaculture systems and development. There are over 1200 m2 of dedicated and well-equipped laboratory spaces covering virology, microbiology, parasitology, pathology, electron microscopy, biochemistry, nutritional physiology, immunology, reproductive physiology, radio immunoassay, molecular biology, genetics, water chemistry, ecotoxicology, crustacean biology, and geographical information systems. The Institute is unique within Europe in being able to offer within one institution this range of facilities devoted to aquaculture research. In addition, there are 750 m2 of excellent aquarium facilities at Stirling suitable for cold and warm water freshwater species, and for work with infectious diseases. Nearby there are further extensive freshwater facilities and the Institute also has a semi-commercial scale marine facility on the west coast of Scotland.
