LOW COST PENSTOCK DAM AND TURBINE CONSTRUCTION OF OPTIMUM USE OF STORAGE AT TAWNAWULLY, BARNESMORE, CO DONEGAL

Ziel

To demonstrate the use of low cost penstock material construction, low cost intake/dam construction, low cost turbine construction and incorporate automatic break which eliminates the need for quick shutoff, cellular telephone control system to operate remote valve water which can be used to improve the output of, existing installations, harnessing hydro power and improving the river amenity by providing a new lake and fish passes.

The project has a number of innovations :
* The dam will be a stone faced earth filled construction using local site materials, reducing cost and blending with the natural surroundings.
The low pressure penstock will be constructed in the most part from low cost reinforced concrete pipes compared to more costly P.E. Ductile iron or steel pipes. The pipeline will incorporate a syphon effect to overcome negative falls without costly excavation in rock during construction. The high pressure pipeline will be constructed from prestressed concrete pipes. The inclusion of a surge tank slow closure valve system allows this material to be utilised with a Francis turbine which would not be possible otherwise due to waterhammer.
Remote control valves will be used to provide secondary storage at two outlaying loughs. These will be operated via a cellular telephone system.
The turbine will have a runaway speed of 1,350 rev/min for 24 hours facilitating slow closure of isolating valves.
The intake construction will have an automatic cleaning device and low cost automatic bleed. This controls the amount of bypass water and at the same time ensures a good flushing action on a regular basis. The detailed design and construction ensures a relatively low cost good suction depth for the penstock pipeline.
