SCHIELDAIG HYDRO PROJECT ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL STRATEGY & AUTOMATIC MONITORING

Obiettivo

The North West of Scotland with its high rainfall and loch (lake) systems is ideally suited for hydro electric. Landscape and environmental assessments at the location of this project require a scheme to be designed and built to suit UK area designations and European habitats directives for protected birds, fish and fresh water pearl mussels which inhabit land, lochs and rivers. By the technological input of automated water level sensors, weather radar communications and valve controls used in an innovative way the scheme remains viable, while integration with the landscape and protection of species is achieved.
Data on water availability, bird, fish and fresh water pearl mussel life have been collected, and is continuing to be collected, to provide base data for a monitoring programme over 5 years, during construction and on completion. As the works have not yet started, no other results are available.
Protection of important European birds and water life is attained by making use of high quality instruments and telemetry which has the ability to refine collected data and transfer to the physical operation of the scheme. Benefits of having this high quality control outweighs any manual operation, while giving the water regime protection and enhancement of flora and fauna. Fish, some generic, are an important feed stock for birds, also a tourist demand, which has been protected by developing floating fish passes enabling fish spawning between the variable level water store system and connecting rivers. Monitoring of birds, fish, invertebrates and other habitats, also water level drawdown and water availability for electricity generation is programmed for 5 years to allow assessment, change and improvements to maintain and protect the designated species.
Data collected will be passed to water authorities, environmental groups and to satisfy reservoir regulations. telemetry links to companies offices will allow for the continuous monitoring of the performance of the scheme.

Programma(i)

Programmi di finanziamento pluriennali che definiscono le priorità dell’UE in materia di ricerca e innovazione.

Argomento(i)

Invito a presentare proposte

Procedura per invitare i candidati a presentare proposte di progetti, con l’obiettivo di ricevere finanziamenti dall’UE.
