By modelling the possible physical, chemical and biological changes to the delta and its ecosystem, a number of scenarios can be constructed which can reflect the future evolution of this endangered ecosystem. By combining this with the greenhouse gas flux data obtained through this project, it will be possible to predict the changing pattern of gas fluxes for each scenario locked at.
The data can then be extrapolated to similar settings around the Black Sea and beyond, to evaluate the global impact of changes to delta ecosystems of this type.
Emissions of greenhouse gases from the Black Sea, Danube Delta and adjacent coastal zone have been recorded in previous and ongoing international projects such as IGBP, EROS 2000 and EROS 21. The changes in the fluxes of gases from this region can be related to changes in the physical, biological and chemical parameters of the delta and coastal zone, which responds to both local changes caused by changes in sediment and nutrient input through the Danube and related rivers, and physical changes to the delta caused by large scale land engineering works such as land reclamation, as well as to global effects.
This project is designed to record the actual fluxes of greenhouse gases (eg. CO2, NH4, NO2) from different settings using state of the art in situ multi-gas sampling technology. The CO2 data can be used to determine the Net Ecosystem Exchange (NEE), when used in combination with land and vegetation maps based on remote sensing and airborne geophysics and which can be scaled up to give a picture of the current fluxes of greenhouse gases across the Delta and adjacent coastal zone.
The project is divided into a number of tasks and sub-tasks, carefully formulated to yield a high amount of new date which will ensure the contribute to the success of the project. The team of research institutes and organizations combined in this project represent a wide range of expertise in the several disciplines needed for an effective realization of the project. It combines the main research institutes active in the Romanian and Ukrainian parts of the Delta and coastal zone, complemented by internationally accredited institutes in the fields of greenhouse gas monitoring, remote sensing, geophysics, GIS and hydrology.
This project complements ongoing studies such as EROS 21, which are concerned primarily with the biogases coming from the saline Black Sea water column, and will generate new data from the delta and coastal zone which will provide a better understanding of the Black Sea system as a whole.
