Determination of earthquake source parameters in geologically compl ex media

Obiettivo

Foreseen Results

The theoretical component will address the problems of the inversion routine itself and the modelling of seismic wave propagation in a complex medium and the experimental component will test the algorithms developed during the theoretical phase.
The ability to determine sufficiently accurate source parameters from earthquakes is an important element of any seismic hazard assessment. The proposed project addresses one key aspect of this topic : the design, optimization and validation of a seismic waveform inversion scheme for the retrieval of mechanism and rupture history information for an earthquake buried in a complex medium. These complexities include the anisotropy of the medium surrounding the focus and the presence of discontinuities close to the source which correspond to the types of structural complexities which are found in nature.

The proposed project will include complementary theoretical and experimental components. For this purpose data from a series of controlled experiments from Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd's Underground Research Laboratory (URL) will be used. This research facility offers a unique opportunity to study both controlled acoustic sources and natural mining induced earthquakes , in a controlled environment.

This project builds on existing collaboration between the partners involved : Geophysical Institute of the Czech Academy in Prague and the University of Hamburg in the modelling of elastic waves in complex media, and the University of Keele and the Czech Academy concerning the link between inverse problems and the modelling of experimental data from the controlled environment of the URL.
