Innovative TEchnologies to improve WEar REsistance

Obiettivo

Foreseen Results

Data base on wear behaviour of various friction joints under severe operation conditions; technology prototypes of laser alloying of steel with soft metals and thermodiffusion synthesis of sulphides of substrate elements; self-lubricated composite materials for manufacturing of high wear resistance wear parts; software for prediction of durability of solid lubricant layers and self-lubricated composite materials; pilot batches of actual friction parts with improved wear resistance; recommendations for industrial implementation of the developed technologies prototypes; publications in international journal and results presentation on international conferences.
A number of industrial tasks concerning friction joints reliability and durability is not solved up to now. The most complicated wear problems are related with extremely severe operation conditions which are characterized by the combination of the following negative factors: high contact stresses, high dynamic and impact loads, high sliding or rolling velocities. Galling, fatigue spalling and fast failure of friction surfaces are the main features of the wear processes at such type of operation conditions. The wear rate also can be strongly accelerated by some additional negative factors: high or low temperatures, influence of chemically active or slightly viscous media, vacuum conditions, etc.
The absence of technologies for sufficient (2-3 times) improvement of wear resistance at severe operation conditions limits the reliability, durability and safety of critical parts of a considerable body of modern machines and mechanisms.
For successful operation of tribotechnical units under severe operation conditions it is necessary to develop:
new methods and technology prototypes for wear resistance improvement of the surface layer offriction parts;
new self- lubricated high strength composite materials for friction parts manufacturing.
The main objectives of the present Project are the following:
development of technology prototype of Thermochemical diffusion synthesis of solid lubricant composition (based on MOS2 + sulphide of substrate elements: Fe, Ni, Cr, etc.); evaluation of feasibility of this method for titanium and aluminium alloys;
development of new self-lubricated composite materials based on intermetallic matrices with inclusions of various solid lubricants compositions intended for manufacturing of high wear resistance friction parts by Hot Isostatic Pressing Technology;
development of technology prototype of laser surface synthesis to produce low shearing layers based on the extended nonequilibrium solid solution of soft metals (Sn, Pb, In, Ga) in iron;
evaluation of feasibility of various methods of laser synthesis of hardening compositions in surface layers of light alloys (laser nitriding in nitrogen jet, laser alloying of aluminum alloys with Fe, Sn).
The main Expected Achievements are the following:
technology prototype of synthesis of solid lubricant composition (SLC) directly in surface layers of steels;
new self-lubricated intermetallic powder compositions intended for manufacturing of high wear resistance parts;
technology prototype of laser surface alloying of steels with soft metals;
choice of the most relevant methods for surface hardening of aluminium and titanium alloys to be applied in various fields of modern industry.
