Research, development, prototype-manufacturing and test of a new Sensor based on Barkhausen effect for an advanced WEIGHT AND BALANCE SYSTEM

Ziel

Foreseen Results

Development of a new Sensor based on Barkhausen Effect; laboratory testing of new Sensor for an advanced aircraft's Weight and Balance System.
The present state of the art for aircraft WEIGHT AND BALANCE SYSTEM (WBS) is based on magnetic field variation at inductive sensors mounted to the landing gears whereby shear force deflection caused by aircraft load and stresses on the landing gear structure is measured. The need to measure extremely small deflections requires very precise fabrication; adjustment and calibration of sensors and their attachment to the landing gear.
The proposed approach is based upon the advanced Barkhausen Noise Sensors developed in recent years for quantitative non-destructive material evaluation particularly for the stresses in ferromagnetic materials. These sensors are based on Barkhausen Effect which is the discontinuous displacement of magnetic domain walls during the demagnetization. It is known that this stochastic process is strongly influenced by the value of internal stresses in the loaded material. The sensitivity of these sensors is extremely high; namely in the range of real stresses which arise in the loaded landing gear structure.
Consequently it is expected that the development of a new Barkhausen Noise Sensor for WBS would diminish problems associated with sensor manufacture; mounting and calibration. The real benefit of the sensor is to reduce the number of sensors from 32 to 8 (e.g. for A340 application) where by reducing substantially the cost and weight and increasing the system reliability.
The objectives of this project are firstly to take advantage of the advanced fundamental scientific knowledge of the institutions of Latvia (Riga Technical University) and Belarus (Scientific Center "Diagnostics"; Minsk) for the research; development and manufacturing of a new sensor based on Barkhausen Effect. This principally new solution is based upon the direct measurements of stresses arising in the landing gear structure under aircraft load. The technology is not yet well developed and requires extensive laboratory testing.
Secondarily; this cooperation will enable the SC "Diagnostics" and Riga Technical University to be introduced to Western European standards; techniques; methods of planning; research; development; coordination and management.
This project is undertaken in cooperation with Daimler-Benz Aerospace Airbus (Dasa-Airbus) and British Aerospace Airbus (Bae Airbus); which are the experienced partners for WBS; together with the Scientific Center "Diagnostics" of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus and Riga Technical University (Latvia) on the subject of Barkhausen Effect; technique and mounting.
Dasa Airbus will coordinate the project; define the sensor requirements and assist the planned laboratory tests. BAe will consult and support all necessary landing gear activities. SC "Diagnostics" will research; develop and produce the adequate sensor and Riga Technical University will develop and produce an adequate mounting device to the landing gear.
On completion of this programme; the results of this project should be tested under real aircraft conditions in comparison to the existing WEIGHT AND BALANCE SYSTEM with another supportive measure.
