A book will be published, summarizing the results of the scientific cooperation. The book will contain the history of the breed, the morphologic parameters (breed standards), the results of immunogenetic and molecular genetic investigations and a computerized stud book system, which will also be established during the study. The results of this interdisciplinary work will be useful in practice both, for avoiding the possible damage of close inbreeding, and in the preservation of the endangered Lipizzan breed. The LIF, partner No 4, undertakes the task of dissemination of the results among the Lipizzan breeders throughout European and the world.
The goal of this project is to present a scientifically based description of the phenotypic and genotypic structure of Lipizzan horses and to make recommendations on the use of the results in practice.
The Lipizzan breed can be regarded as a Paneuropean horse because the traditional studs, though small, are found in many EU and CCE countries and now it is bred in 17 European states. The number of pure bred mares in original studs is small and so the preservation policy of the breed is also important. These elegant Baroque type horses are part of European cultural heritage and are suitable for riding, driving and light draught work besides their use in the Spanish Riding School.
The scientific goal of the partnership is to detect immunogenetic, polymorphic parameters, DNA markers and to study them in relationship with morphologic and performance parameters of horses. Health status will be also included. Pedigree analysis is an important part of the project, because the problems of inbreeding,the characteristics of traditional lines and families are also a substantial part of the study. Thus, an estimation of expressiveness of modern methods will also be possible.
