The Changing Role of Soybean in China's Food System: A Study in its Production, Processing, Consumption and Trade

Obiettivo

The main objectives are defined as follows :
* To analyse the present soybean economy in China and its future prospects, as concerns its production, processing, consumption and trade. It should highlight a major turning point in Chinese agriculture in the coming new century.
* To construct a supply-demand model for the soybean in China to determine, with the soybean as a case study, the ability of the Chinese agriculture to respond to rapid changes in consumption demands for animal products.
* To assess the possibility of a shifting role for soybean, with a particular attention to the constraining factors of agricultural systems, the implied evolution in the processing industry and trade organisation, and possible developments in external exchanges.
* To give a macro-economic review on production, consumption, processing and trade of soybean in China, from past years to the present time, and to project its future impacts on the world market.
Expected Outcome

This project should provide a series of different research reports on soybean economy in China, including production, processing, consumption and trade; the socio-economic impacts of soybean economy in China; soybean economy and environment in China; soybean market in China and the world. The results of the research will be published in Chinese to improve the agricultural system in the relevant provinces to benefit the local farmers by improving agricultural structure and environment there. The results will be published also in Europe to get as much publicity as possible.
The key activities involve:
* To complete two case studies in the leading soybean-producing provinces of Heilongjiang and Henan. These investigations will be conducted by the Chinese and European partners in the two selected counties during three weeks for each county.
* A supply response system model and two complete demand system models (separately for rural and urban) will be developed to generate various supply and demand elasticities parameters for use in the projection model. To estimate the feed use of soybean in China and its impacts on growth of livestock production.
* Chinese scientists will organise several on-the-spot training courses in Heilongjiang and Henan to improve management skill of the local farmers and enhance the human capacity, so that more rational cropping pattern will be identified in these major soybean-producing provinces.
* A proposal will be submitted to the Chinese government on soybean production, processing and marketing. A book titled "The Soybean Economy in China" will be published in Chinese and English.
