Obiettivo
The project is focused on the exploitation of research results stemming from three projects carried out in the framework of BRITE programme. The projects, independently co-ordinated by SEPAREM and TECH SEP, were related to the development of a new microfiltration membrane, and the application of membrane technology to the textile industry and olive-oil production. The aim of the present proposal is to combine results of research carried out at TECH SEP and SEPAREM to develop respectively state-of-the-art microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes, and spiral wound membrane modules.
The novel products are intended to significantly advance the state-of-the-art of the current technology and consequently to increase the commercial potential of the two companies world-wide. In fact, due to the proven excellence of products singularly developed by the two companies (membranes and spiral modules) the products resulting from this proposal can strengthen the membrane industry and end-users which currently import from non-European countries more than US$ 27 Million per year of similar, but less efficient, membrane modules.
The aim of this project was to develop novel ultrafiltration and microfiltration membrane modules and carry out pilot tests at end-users' sites to validate the application of the products in the following areas: concentration of human albumin and immonoglobines, treatment of milk and wey, treatment of wine and treatment of apple juices. The research area is very specialised and the project brings together research results developed by a French and Italian companies. This collaboration eases the risks and costs to enhance the competitiveness of these firms and hence to reduce reliance on non-European imports.
The technology to be validated is expected to have important community benefits especially in the following areas : cohesion (technology developed in South Europe and used all over Europe), ecological (there will be a major reduction of waste products), employment and modernisation of traditional industries. The project replaces existing technology, imported from non-European countries, with improved technology from European producers. It is not a transfer of technology either within or across sectors but validation of technology.
Pilot tests at end-users' sites were carried out to validate the application of the membranes and spiral module products. It is interesting that positive results were seen the in pilot tests ORELIS carried out in the dairy and blood industries, where economic advantage could be derived from better product quality. The "PERSEP" trademark was registered and ORELIS was able to offer competitive products on the dairy market. However, SEPAREM carried out pilot tests with the Juice and wine industries which encountered some difficulties.
