Obiettivo The purpose of the project is further development and application of optical methods for the study of fluid dynamic phenomena and heat and mass transfer processes. A novel diagnostics technique based on speckle photography (SP) and liquid-crystal (LC) - particle image velocimetry (PIV), featuring direct CCD recording of specklegram, will be applied for the determination of velocity, density, temperature/concentration and shear stresses fields. By using the multi-directional measurements and computerized tomography approach, the 3D macro-scale fields will be reconstructed for combustion, turbulent jets and thermoconvective flows.The main fluid dynamic experimental programme will be conducted in Minsk, the development of LC technique for PIV measurements being done in Novosibirsk. There is already close collaboration between Minsk and Essen, Minsk and Poitiers, Essen and Poitiers, and Minsk and Novosibirsk. The project will allow further exchange of personnel between the CIS and the EC in order that expertise on the SP, LC, and PIV techniques can be transferred between the groups.Specifically, the new areas to be investigated will be:(a) Multi-directional measurement by using single (prolonged) exposure speckle photography (SPESP) with the purpose of the local turbulence parameters determination in anisotropic flows;(b) Multi-directional measurement by using double (or multiple) exposure speckle photography (DESP or MESP) in order to determine the local temperature (density) in 3D flows;(c) PIV measurements with liquid crystal particles allowing to simultaneous measurements both temperature and velocity fields in thermoconvective flows;(d) The use of multiple and fast CCD cameras for image capture in SP and PIV schemes.By extending the NIS - FSU collaboration we would expect to make significant advances, both in the development of new techniques, and in the application of existing techniques to problems of importance for the international community. We would also expect to expand on our industrial contacts to ensure that the results will bring tangible benefits.
