Structure, phase behaviour and properties of floating and transferred Langmuir monolayers and self-organized multilayers of new mesophase silicon polymers

Obiettivo

We request support for a collaborative project to determine the structure, phase behaviour and properties of floated and transferred monolayers and multilayers of new unique classes of macromolecules - cyclic polyorganosiloxanes, polyorganosiloxanes and polycarboorganosiloxanes in order to extend our understanding of the molecular structural requirements for multilayer collapse of monolayers. Under lateral compression at the water-air interface many of these mesophase macromolecules demonstrate self-organized collapse of monolayers resulting in formation of anisotropic multilayered structures. The transitions between layers are considered phase transitions. Hence, the present investigation concerns mainly the development from the initially two-dimensional single layer into the third dimension due to lateral pressure. We will use pressure-area diagrams to determine thermodynamic characteristics of the phase transitions and clarify the role of the molecular structure of macromolecules on the phase diagrams.

We will also use modern techniques to investigate fluid interfaces and to determine the structure of monolayers and organized multilayers and to derive the criteria for the formation of the ordered multilayer structures. The techniques include Synchrotron X-ray diffraction, X-ray and Neutron reflection, fluorescence-Brewster angle microscopy and imaging ellipsometry, second harmonic generation, FTIR spectroscopy and dynamic mechanical spectroscopy. Atomic Force Microscopy characterization will be used to examine the possibility of transferring of floating self-organized multilayers onto solid supports in order to develop a new method of film deposition.
