Measurement of nucleon structure in low x kinematic region at the HERA collider

Obiettivo

This research project will carry out precise measurements of nucleon structure functions in ep deep inelastic scattering at the HERA collider with the H1 detector. The measurement of the structure functions will give detailed information about the constituent structure of the proton at short space-time scale which is accessible with HERA. The project will explore the new kinematics domain, where the constituents of the proton (quarks and gluons) carry a very small part of the nucleon momenta - the so-called low x regime.

As a first step a calorimeter will be build to upgrade the backward part of the H1 detector which will play the main role in the measurements. Among the prime aims of the upgrade will be to extend the calorimeter acceptance closer to the beam line, achieve high energy resolution for the scattered electron and a measurement of hadronic final states. The calorimeter will consist of the scintillating fibres interleaved with thin lead profile. This novel calorimetric technique has outstanding properties, which make it particularly interesting for the upgrade application. The calorimeter will be separated into electromagnetic and hadronic sections. The hadronic section will be designed, built and tested in Moscow.
