The project aimed for a better understanding of the shallow and deep structure of continental rift zones, focusing on the Baikal and Tanganyika rifts and to examine the geodynamic processes governing the evolution of sedimentary basins contained in these rifts. The present phase of the project was mainly devoted at finalizing the processing of the previously collected data, and at assembling the results of the disciplinary components of the project in an integrated interpretation. The project contributed substantially to the understanding of the dynamics and the kinematics of deep rift basins, under different aspects : - the link between fundamental discontinuities of the crust or the continental lithosphere was substantiated. This was shown as well for the Baikal rift and the smaller Teletsk graben, as for the Tanganyika rift. - the role of external forces in the kinematics of the initiation and development of deep rifit basins (as exemplified by the Baikal rift and the Teletsk graben) was clearly established. - the kinematics of these basins are considered within the Cenozoic deformational pattern of the Central Asian continent. - the kinematics of basin initiation have been defined in the case of the Teletsk basin, and the kinematics of basin development have been investigated in Lake Baikal, evidencing how new basins developed along relay zones between the border faults. - modelling was applied for explaining the kinmatics of continental extension in the Baikal rift. - modelling of the heat flow balance in the Baikal basin shows that anomalies in heat flow result from local convective processes, and stresses the particular characteristics of deep rift basins with regard to heat flow. - the combination of structural analysis on land and the analysis of tectonic processes in the sedimentary fill of the basins (Baikal and issyk-Kul), permits to approach the problem of tectonic pulses and of timing of tectonic processes. Furthermore, several spin-offs of the research activities were developed by the participants or by associated teams : - the sediments of the Baikal, Teletsk and Issyk-Kyl basins were investigated for the purpose of reconstructing environmental and climate changes. This reconstruction was completed for the Teletsk basin and is in progress for the Issyk-Kul basin. - the structural investigations led to the development of skills for the identification of active faults by combining different techniques a.o. satellite imagery and radon profiling in soils.
