The research concerns laying the foundation for a new generation of electric drives whose enhanced efficiency is expected to lead to significant cost savings in industry together with an ecological benefit through a reduction in power demands. The foundations have been laid for a new generation of electric drives employing either induction motors or synchronous motors based largely on the principles of sliding mode control. The new electric drive control systems embody: regenerative operation in the interests of energy conservation and ecological benefits; robust closed loop performance; prescribed closed loop dynamics. The state of the art techniques of vector control and direct self control used elsewhere do not simultaneously satisfy these three criteria. A prototype of the new electric drive applied with induction motors has been demonstrated, proving the viability of the new concept. In this completely new approach, the motor and its load is considered as a non linear multivariable plant with the stator voltages as the control variables and the stator currents as the measurement variables. Most importantly, the new method does not require shaft mounted speed or angle sensors and so the resulting drive is 'sensorless' in the accepted terminology. Only the stator currents are measured. The system is self exciting, automatically generating its own po-phase currents. Responses to the reference speed demand are independent with a time constant that may be chosen to suit the particular application. This is also true for the rotor magnetic flux magnitude set point in the version intended for induction motors. A novel universal switching strategy for digitally controlled matrix converters, inverters and rectifiers, has been generated specifically to work with the new electric drive control systems. The switching strategy is intended for implementation on a digital processor.
