Synthesis of solid lubricant coatings working under severe wear conditions

Obiettivo

The number of machines and mechanisms working in extreme conditions increases every year. The problem of movable joints in a vacuum, in low and high temperatures, and in chemically active and slightly viscous media is becoming more important in the chemical, electrical and drilling engineering industries, radio-electronics, nuclear physics, etc. For the successful operation of tribotechnical units in these conditions it is necessary to develop special lubricated materials and lubrication methods.

The use of solid lubricant coatings on the base of disulfides, nitrides of the 5-6th metal groups of the periodic system and soft metals such as tin, lead, gallium, is often more effective. Existing solid lubricant coatings have certain deficiencies: low adhesion with substrata; presence of organic and non-organic fillers that impede texturing of the surface layers of coating; high gas emission; lower durability; impossibility of use together with plastic lubricants.

To avoid these deficiences this project will develop the following new methods: surface synthesis of solid lubricant coatings on the base of synthetic molybdenum disulfides and titanium nitrides; surface synthesis of solid lubricant coatings on the base of gallium; alloying of surface layers by lead and tin; and a durability prediction technique for these solid lubricant coatings.
