Investigation of the properties of new superhard materials based on refractory compounds with high boron content

Ziel

Boron-containing refractory compounds belong to the category of superhard materials and have the greatest potential for the creation of new advanced materials based on composites with a ceramic matrix. Their hardness can exceed the hardness of the wurtzite and sphalerite forms of boron nitride and, at high temperatures, can be superior to that of diamond. However, information on the structure, mechanical properties and structural sensitivity of the mechanical properties for specified compounds are contradictory and unreliable.

This project aims to: synthesize powders of the chosen compounds (B-Ti-C, B-Ca-C, B-Cr-W-C); obtain, through sintering and hot pressing, specimens of single-phase materials and composites with a ceramic matrix; investigate the structural state of these materials; and study plastic deformation during local loading by rigid indenters and soft impressors and other complex mechanical properties in the temperature interval 20 degrees-2000 degrees K.

The results will be used for the development of a new category of unique superhard engineering materials with a ceramic matrix.
