Study of speciation in biological systems containing macromolecular ligands: application of new chemometric methods

Obiettivo

This project brings together several research teams with experience in different aspects related to the study of complex equilibria in solution. In this project, the interactions between several metal ions and biologically active organic ligands, like nucleic acids, proteins and their constituents, will be studied. These chemical interactions between metal ions and naturally occurring organic compounds will determine in many cases the biological activity of the processes in which these ligands participate.

Special emphasis will be given to the development of new chemometric and computational methods for the study of these systems, and also to the development of the experimental methodology for the evaluation and quantification of conformational, polyfunctional and polyelectrolytic effects. These effects, which may be present in the macromolecular systems under study, affect the stability of the species formed and their biological activity.
