A search for neutrino oscillations at the French nuclear power station "Chooz"

The detector needed for this project has been built, and now is taking data since August 1996.The performances described in the workprogramme have been achieved, and the background was measured during 1996, as expected, and found very low. The Chooz reactors have started in 1997.The detector has achieved at the beginning a new scintillator, more stable; this is the responsibility of the USA part of collaboration. The new data taken in 1997 benefit of this new scintillator. The data taking of the Chooz experiment is currently stopping in the 1998 Summer. The final data analysis is in progress, using a new program allowing more detailed comparisons between various calibration and electronics. The Kurchatov team has been deeply involved in this work, mainly in the neutron calibration of the detector efficiency, and in the fast and slow waveform analysis. The neutron calibration of the detector uses a Californium fission source, with a solidstate detector built in Moscow and operated at Chooz by the russian team.
