Self-organization and non-linear phenomena in magnetized plasmas

Obiettivo

The objective of this project is the organization of international collaboration in the theory of non-linear plasma phenomena. It includes: general physics/plasma theory investigations in the fields of mutual interest of participants; regular exchange of scientific information at international ViSitS; and exchange of experimental data and comparison of theoretical predictions with experimental results.

The actuality of the project results from the fact that the phenomena of self-regulation and self-organization are widespread in nature. In thermodynamically open systems some regular structures are known to appear spontaneously, and self-organization processes can occur. Space plasmas and high-temperature laboratory plasmas created and confined in a magnetic field are typical examples of such self-organizing media. When an additional amount of energy, momentum or matter is injected into a plasma, a redundancy of free energy appears. Freeing itself, it can result in the formation of macroscopically stable profiles of plasma density and temperature, in the redistribution of current density and in a change of magnetic field topology, etc. This self-organizing process is accompanied by relaxation oscillations, plasma convection and mixing, and anomalous transport phenomena. The study of self-organizing processes is of interest both for space and laboratory plasma problems. It is also important for recognizing general regularities of the physical world. The joint efforts of several theoretical laboratories of different countries will enable the development of new approaches and better understanding of self-organizing processes in magnetoplasmas. The following topics will be studied: integral methods for relaxed stationary states with flows and non-linear plasma stability problems; and non-linear regular structures, Alfven turbulence, and neoclassical effects on MHD instabilities.

The aim of the project is to offer an integrated structure to independent investigations of the participants. These investigations will be carried out using both analytical and numerical techniques.
