Objective
The principal aim of the project is to develop a relational database of Russian verbs, nouns and adverbs. Queries can be conducted according to a variety of parameters, such as semantic class, indicating whether a verb refers to a state ('be', 'own'), process ('run'), completed action ('find') and so on. The database will be extended from 100 to 7000 entries.
The system has two components. The first ('the Database') is a dictionary with information about meanings and grammatical properties such as verbal aspect. The second component ('the Knowledge base') consists of sets of principles that make it possible to manipulate the information contained in the Database. The Knowledge base determines the relationship between semantic verb class and grammatical behaviour (e.g. whether the verb has a perfective form). The Knowledge base also contains information about constraints on combinability of words. For instance, the Russian verb meaning 'widen' cannot combine with a noun meaning 'instrument', i.e. it is impossible to say 'widen the hole with a spade' (though you can say 'dig the hole with a spade'). The Knowledge base contains information about context-dependent aspectual meanings. For instance, it is impossible to say in Russian 'They are blowing up the bridge', using the imperfective form of the verb. Finally the Knowledge base contains information about the possible types of shifts of meaning or usage of a given verb. For instance, we can describe essentially the same activity as 'weeding the dandelions (in the garden)' or 'weeding the garden (of dandelions)'. The Russian teams will continue to develop these aspects of the database. The German team will make use of the database to investigate classes of verbs and grammatical phenomena not developed in detail by the Russian groups and will compare Russian with Polish and German. The German team will make use of the database to investigate classes of verbs and grammatical phenomena not developed in detail by the Russian groups and will compare Russian with Polish and German including verbs of communication, ways of expressing 'try to do something' and the differences between expressions like 'the door has been opened' and 'the door is open'. The British group will use the database to enrich a similar type of database which they are developing independently, looking in detail at a specific class of verbs and also at the nouns derived from verbs (as in 'the completion of the project by the researchers').
