Objective
The primary aim of the project is to work out the theory of asymptotic representations and almost representations for discrete groups as well as Lie groups. The emphasis will be on the applications to the problem of describing the homotopy invariants appearing in the theory of smooth manifolds, the index theory of elliptic operators, and topological K-theory. Several problems in mathematical physics related to applications of symmetry theory are connected with this, and will also be treated.
Another - closely related - aim of the project is to develop a theory based on a synthesis of analytical methods for discrete groups and group algebra theory, of methods from the index theory theory of elliptic operators over C*-algebras, of the theory of Hilbert modules, and of noncommutative geometry, all directed towards the construction of new homotopic, topological and geometric invariants of manifolds that are not necessarily simply connected. Results obtained while implementing the project will be published in a series of articles in scientific journals.
