The goal of this project is to develop Medium Voltage Field Emission Display (MVFED) as an alternative to AMLCD solutions in car information systems.
Innovations are required to meet automotive requirements:
- electron beam focusing in order to reduce the electron emission cone from the current 70 deg. to 20deg.,
- stand off voltage technologies to bring the operating voltage from the current 3 V/micron to 4V/micron,
- scrubbing technologies and getter solutions to achieve a lifetime exceeding 5000 hours.
MVFED will be implemented into 7.0 inch diagonal demonstrators that will be evaluated with respect to automotive standards and that will be compared to other display technologies. AUDI plans to use it in its cars to solve the limitations of AMLCDs. The consortium will seek industrial partnerships in Europe for volume manufacturing.
Technical results have already confirmed the feasibility and potential of the MVFED approach with prototypes demonstrated in operation at 3 to 4 KeV with very good brightness.
Pixtech has recently annouced that MVFED will become their mainstream technology and confirmed their intention to industrialise it.
Objectives:
The goal of this project is to develop Medium Voltage Field Emission Display (MVFED) and to demonstrate that this new innovative technology meets the automotive market demand for an alternative to AMLCD solutions. By month 18, we will demonstrate 7.0" displays, fully qualified with respect to automotive standards with a peak brightness of 2000 cd/m2 before filter, a contrast higher than 3 at 50,000 lux (sunlight readability) and a life time exceeding 5000 hours in automotive use conditions - temperature range viewing angle and video speed being far ahead of AMLCD performances.
Work description:
In order to achieve the appropriate level of brightness, we will develop a new FED structure with an operating voltage of 2000-4000 V (as opposed to the current 600V). This structure will require innovation in the following areas:
electron beam focusing in order to reduce the electron emission cone from the current 70 deg to 40 deg and finally down to 20 deg.
stand off voltage technologies to increase the operating voltage to 4 V/micron
optimised getter technologies
These technologies will be implemented into 7.0" demonstrators designed according to automotive requirements. Demonstrators will be evaluated in laboratory as well as in cars with respect to automotive standards. Comparative tests with competing technologies will be performed in cars.
Preliminary 7.0" demonstrator will be issued at month 10. It will have full product features but limited optical and lifetime performances. Final 7.0" demonstrator will be issued at month 15. The project endpoint will be the qualification report of 7.0" demonstrator integrated in cars.
Expected results:
Beyond this project PixTech's objective is to industrialise the 7.0" display. AUDI plans to use it in its cars for replacement of AMLCD. The consortium will seek industrial partnerships in Europe for volume manufacturing.
