An agent based approach to controlling resources in UMTS networks

Ziel

The project will create a novel architecture for efficient, scalable & robust real time control of resources in 3rd generation mobile systems in the context of realistic business models of network providers, service providers and customers. This is technically difficult and has not been attempted before. Success will give end-users an improved and more cost-effective service, and operators increased management flexibility. It will achieve this through using advanced and distributed software technologies (particularly Intelligent Agent Technology) to address issues such as scalability; it will also implement & validate mechanisms & algorithms for dynamic run-time resource allocation on an experimental UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephony System) testbed, evaluating how the resulting resource allocation system improves the overall performance of the network, in particular its adaptability to localised high traffic demands and fluctuations.

Objectives:
i) To implement advanced and distributed software technologies (particularly Intelligent Agent Technology) in a resource configuration system that dynamically allocates radio and associated fixed network resources in third generation mobile communication systems to provide:
-end-users with an improved and more cost-effective service, and
-operators with increased opportunities for contingency management where for financial, social, safety or environmental reasons, allocation policies need to be dynamically changed.
ii) To evaluate how the resulting resource allocation system improves the overall performance of the network (in particular assessing its adaptability to localised high traffic demands and fluctuations) and to compare the scheme with more centralised approaches.
iii) To disseminate the results of this work and to promote Agent Technology in Standards bodies.
iv) To include in the distributed intelligence, mechanisms to take into account the business objectives of the network operator, multiple service providers and customers and to investigate how these objectives affect resource allocation decisions.
