The ITSWAP project aims to contribute to the development of innovative services that deliver Internet-like information to mobile users. To achieve this, the project will establish the technical and commercial feasibility of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) services provided over Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). The project will define and test the WAP delivery mechanisms for a number of on-board and off-board ITS applications in different field trial sites across Europe. It will also promote the adoption of WAP as an ITS platform for service providers and the car industry.
Objectives:
The aim of this project is to establish the technical and commercial feasibility of ITS provided through WAP. The project will define and test the WAP delivery mechanisms for a number of ITS applications in different field trial sites across Europe. In particular, key technological/ergonomical/commercial studies will be performed on the mechanisms for a pan-European service, on the ways to build a successful service that can be accessed anywhere and on the offer of specific ITS services on WAP terminals. By involving all sectors in the field and by using professional communication tools, the project intends to create wide awareness of its results and to formulate recommendations to relevant bodies such as the GATS-Forum and WAP Forum.
Work description:
The Service requirement definition aims to identify ITS services that could be provided over WAP and to compile a comprehensive overview of user needs to be fulfilled by ITS services that will be demonstrated in the project. Within the Service specifications and system implementation work the project will develop a system architecture for the provision of ITS services based on WAP specifications and will specify requirements for service roaming. It will also propose a Framework for quality/operational procedures for service delivery and examples of model service level agreement to provide services and roaming. Finally, within this work the project will develop reference software modules that will be implemented in the different field trials. The objective of each field trial will then be to implement ITS services using the specifications developed. Four sites are proposed: UK, Sweden, France and Italy.
A wide range of ITS services will be implemented including route guidance, on-trip and pre-trip information, Point Of Interest, remote control of vehicle and car pooling. The WAP performances will then be addressed in Assessment and Evaluation. Recommendations to improve WAP will be proposed and potential synergy between WAP and other solutions (such as GATS) will be evaluated. This part of the project will also propose an evolution path for ITS services on wireless technology platforms (e.g. GPRS, UMTS) confronting WAP with other possible technical solutions (such as Java applications). Finally, the project intends to create a strong awareness of its results through Dissemination and Implementation and to describe how the project results will be implemented by the different project partners. First project results will be presented during Torino ITS World Congress 2000.
Milestones:
The project intends to achieve the following milestones: a set of user needs and system requirements related to the provision of ITS services on WAP, a set of system architecture descriptions describing ITS services based on WAP, successful trials of WAP ITS services across Europe, requirements for the roaming of ITS services, elements of the Italian trial available for the Torino 2000 Showcase, evaluation results for the EC and the standardisation bodies and a roadmap for the evolution of wireless ITS.
