Ziel
PKI Challenge aims to create a climate which will allow a fully integrated PKI to be developed in Europe as a key building block for a world wide integrated system. This will remove a major barrier in the development of Electronic Commerce. PKI Challenge will specify a core set of interoperability tests, actively promote these amongst the market players to achieve consensus, build a testing system and recruit a wide range of PKI product and service providers to conduct interoperability tests. By showpiece public demonstrations, input into standardisation activity and other methods of promotion, PKI Challenge aims to change the public and industry perception of the islands of interoperability that currently exist in Europe by showing that they can be and are being fused together into an integrated system for the continued development of electronic commerce in the ever expanding Information Society.
OBJECTIVES
The primary goal of PKI Challenge is to foster the conditions under which a secure environment in Europe can be created for the conduct of electronic commerce based upon the use of heterogeneous PKI products and services. In support of this by operating in a climate of industry consensus, the objectives of PKI Challenge are to:
- promote interoperability amongst a wide range of PKI products, PKI service providers and Certification Authority services;
- demonstrate to the outside world that it is possible to build an integrated Public Key Infrastructure for Europe by showcase public demonstrations using PKI enabled applications;
- change the public and industry perception that secure electronic commerce can only operate within islands of interoperability;
- foster international collaboration to extend the primary goal world wide by promoting the specifications and best practice within the world standards arena.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
A tried and trusted project management methodology (PRINCE 2) will be used for the conduct of the project with a project director responsible for overall direction and, a project manager and a quality manager for day to day management. The project will have four stages:
1) Ground work - this will produce the foundations from which remainder of the project will be launched. WP2 will establish the criteria for participation in PKI Challenge in terms of mandatory features identified in a consultation process in the marketplace and also through clustering activity within IST. WP3 will identify potential PKI Challenge participants using various channels of communication, make a balanced selection based upon the WP2 criteria and will conduct negotiations leading to contracts. WP 3 is split amongst the first three stages;
2) Preparation for testing - this will cover the technical work leading up to the interoperability testing itself. WP4 will specify a detailed interoperability test plan in two parts. The first part allows individual participants can test on their own premises whether their products meet the minimal requirements needed to participate in the collective part of the testing. The second part concerns collective interoperability tests to be conducted on an independent test site via remote testing. WP5 will build the technical test environment and prepare for remote testing, according to the test plan, including installation of the reference implementation against which products and services will be tested;
3) Interoperability testing - this will cover the actual testing (WP6) which for each participant will be two phases as described in the two parts of the test plan;
4) Demonstration and dissemination - here in WP7, the results of the interoperability testing will be demonstrated at two major European Electronic Commerce events and will be disseminated via presentations, brochures, Web sites and articles. WP8 will produce the final report.
