EVAN aims to help achieve European leadership internationally in the growing 'Culture x Technology' field both non-profit and industrial. It builds on the 3 most successful European EVA Conferences in the Med, Central & N European regions plus those in Japan, Russia and USA and the existing Websites. Special attention is paid to dissemination and exploitation help for some 50 EC RTD projects plus local & regional projects. Novel elements include at least six Virtual Exhibitions over 2001 / 2002, the experimental application of emerging RTD results to conference planning and execution, extensive full paper on-line multi-lingual publishing and measures to help new start-ups, SME growth, labour training and mobility. EVAN also targets EU accession countries in Central / E Europe and Mediterranean and holding the first major 'Culture x Technology' Conference in the S Hemisphere.
Objectives:
Primarily to help international leadership by Europe in the growing 'Culture x Technology' field, both non-profit and industrial, by using and strengthening EVA Conferences globally.
Key supporting objectives include:
(1) disseminate and assist exploitation of some 50 EC RTD projects involving over 200 organisations and local / national ones- a critical mass in the field
(2) promote Europe's "Cultural Technology Industry" and strengthen the "Culture x Technology" community across Europe and its international connections
(3) support training, labour mobility and job creation in the field across Europe
(4) assist in attracting venture capital to the European cultural technology industry
(5) promote mutual stimulus and benefits in "Culture x Technology" between the cultural sector, industry, academia and local government
(6) extend the scope of EU EVAs work to help EU accession countries
(7) hold the first S Hemisphere EVA Conference (ahead of the leading US competitor)
(8) sustainable post EVAN actions.
Work description:
The basic approach is to build on the most successful EVA Conferences (of some 40 to date since 1990) across Europe and internationally and associated previous work including Websites and community building (EVA Cluster Projects). Altogether over 2000 people participate in EVA Conferences internationally each year - more than those attending the conferences organised by AMI-ICHIM and Museums on the Web. EVAN will provide a set of platforms (Conferences, Workshops & Exhibitions) plus related Virtual Exhibitions and other Web dissemination. Geographical coverage of the entire EU is organised regionally: Med (Florence-based), Central Europe (Berlin-based) & N Europe (UK-based). Key international partners for EVA Conferences are located in Japan, Russia and US. New ones in accession countries and Southern Hemisphere have already made approaches to the EVAN Consortium.
The main thrusts of EVAN are: User & Market Surveys & EU & International Liaison, EC R&D Projects Scientific, Technological & Exploitation Co-operation Support, Exploitation & Improvement of EVA Conferences in and outside the EU, EVA Website Improvement and Other Publication Activities, Innovative Application of Technology R&D Results for EVA Conferences, Advanced Symposia on Selected "Science & Technology & Cultural & Scientific Heritage, Srategic Review & New Initiatives". EVA Conferences & related physical Exhibitions, Training Seminars and Workshops provide a "spinal chord" reinforced by Web & Internet. dd-on actions can be included in a cost-effective way. The international EVAs in Japan, Russia and USA (plus the first S Hemisphere EVA) enable European missions (industrial ad non-profit members) to disseminate their work & build international partnerships for exploitation. By such a networking approach EVA will have a multiplicative resource effect, the total cost of the planned 12 EVA Conferences themselves will be some 2 million euros - 3 times the proposed budget for the entire EVAN project
Milestones:
The six main European EVAs (March, July, November) will form natural milestones with key progress indicators on participant & Websites visitor numbers, exploitation support actions for EC projects.
Expected results include a co-operating "critical mass" of over 50 EC RTD projects & 200 organisations, some 5000 participants at EVAs & over 20,000 visitors to Websites (6 virtual exhibitions & full EVA papers on-line) - a high proportion of this specialist field population.
