Asset Surveillance and Protection

Ziel

The objective of the ASAP project is to introduce a new concept for asset surveillance and protection in Europe that will be affordable, accurate and user-friendly. ASAP will research, develop and evaluate a designated wireless, info-mobility system that includes end unit devices, system infrastructure and inter-connection databases. The system will improve logistic management of assets as they are transported across Europe, based on location, and security information.

The end unit is designed to be low power using 1.5 mw as opposed to 75mw in existing GSM systems. The end unit's power source will be usable for over 100days without recharging or replacing. The cost of the unit ant its monthly operation costs will be considerably less than equivalent systems. Ubiquitous and seamless access will be made available to the customers, transportation operators, insurance companies and other involved parties. The work is divided into 12 distinctly defined work packages over the 24-monthduration of the project. Since the work is highly collaborative each work package, involves at least 2 partners. In the first stage, user requirements and needs will be identified and defined, based on extensive survey of potential customer and freight and logistics operators. Also in this phase the system specifications will be defined including all the subsystems and the different tasks.

Phase 2 includes the development of the end unit led by Nexus and by Art of Technology, the communication subsystem and the data distribution network led by Sema. These development Work packages will be carried out in parallel. Additionally the planning and GIS, the mobile interface and the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) interface will be defined and developed led by PTV and CDV accordingly. The 3rd phase involves the system integration testing and assessment. The system integration will be led by Nexus followed by the deployment of the infrastructure by Callmax to cover the test area and the testing of the freight delivery of various freight (by Versteijnen and Cemat) and of hazardous freights (by Eurobrom). CCL will be involved in the test and will lead the evaluation and assessment. Dissemination and Exploitation will be performed throughout the extent of the project led by CCL while all other partners will participate.

Work description:
The ASAP system will provide a designated wireless, info-mobility, low cost system that will enable the user to track, locate and monitor in real time, all types of freight, including hazardous materials, as they are transported across Europe.
The end unit is connected to sensors and will therefore be capable of monitoring the state of the freight online. In the case of a leak from a hazardous material, the ASAP system will notify the transportation company, operating company and relevant environmental authorities.
Ubiquitous and seamless access will be available to the end user, transportation operators, insurance companies and other involved parties. Online data will be integrated with existing information databases of the transport operators and provide a comprehensive "smart tracking and protection system".
Location and status information will be accessible to both the mobile user and via the Internet. The system will be integrated with a European-wide ITS database providing immediate benefits both to the European citizen and to the European transport industry. The following block diagram describes the data flow of the information in the ASAP system.

Milestones:
The ASAP project major milestones include:
- Project Kick-off Meeting, (Month01);
- Defining user requirements, (Month04);
- Defining specification for all components and sub-systems, (Month07);
- End unit and location subsystem, (Month 16);
- Annual Report, (Month12);
- Interface for the mobile user and ITS, (Month16);
- Completion of testing and evaluation steps, (Month24);
- Submit Exploitation Plan, (Month24). Submit Final Report, (Month24).
