Synchronised and scalable AV content Across NeTworks

Ziel

The SAVANT project will show how inter-related multimedia content can be delivered to end-users utilizing both broadcast and telecom networks. An important aspect is to make an efficient choice of which service elements to transmit through the different delivery channels. Since different parts of inter-related content will be received through different channels, means to synchronise the presentation of all the components to the user must be provided. The delivery mechanism used should be transparent to the user. Another aspect is that users are likely to work with different types of terminals with different capabilities. These factors imply that content and services should be created in a scalable form so that they can be flexibly delivered to several terminal types through different networks.

Objectives:
The main objectives of the SAVANT project are:
- Creation of scalable services;
- Use of metadata for personalised interactive services;
- Content creation;
- Implementation of synchronisation mechanisms;
- Design and implementation of a system for management of the delivery mechanisms;
- Design and implementation of a content access system;
- Rights management;
- Contribution to standards;
- Demonstration and dissemination of results.

Work description:
The technical work of the project is organised into four workpackages namely:
WP 1 System architecture definition and implementation;
WP 2 Multimedia content provision;
WP 3 Service delivery platforms and transport mechanisms;
WP 4 Content access.

There is one workpackage devoted to management and external relations, namely WP 0 Project management & external relations.
On the application development side of the system, content provision is dealt within a content provision control system, to guide the different steps in content production (capturing, creating, indexing, scaling and planning). The Service Delivery System (SDS) consists of multiplexors and servers to combine, prepare for broadcast and serve programmes to the Content Access System (CAS) through DVB and other networks, such as ADSL. At consumer side, the content access system consists of the access management system, which co-operates with the search and retrieval system and the synchronisation and presentation system to present the services. Consumer interaction at the CAS can be fed back to servers at the SDS via, for example, ADSL network thus allowing the server to react and tailor the transmission accordingly.
