Creative Use of Style & Technology for Ordering the Design and Interactive Elaboration of the Vision

Ziel

Technology for creative users is often wasted, and made without understanding artist's needs. CUSTODIEV will develop technology along with artistic projects, artists shaping technology in a process of creative pull. CUSTODIEV focuses on new methods of creating animation, narrative drawing and performance-driven art. It will create a virtual centre to concentrate expertise in creative pull, provide the means for realising creative pull projects also a virtual forum inspired by open source. It will prototype functionality for a distributed creative pull studio; use creative pull to bootstrap a technology base, promote high-profile creative production; and evaluate this new way of developing technology for artists. CUSTODIEV will result in new technologies, support low-cost production, promote the virtual studio concept, and deliver a showcase of creative results.

Objectives:
The CUSTODIEV objectives are: to prototype functionality for an institutional framework, creating a physical infrastructure and a virtual centre for artistic production using novel digital technologies evolved through creative pull; to create a virtual forum for collaboration between artists and technologists and to accumulate the technological outcomes; to develop easier and cheaper methods of creating narrative art; to engage with the artistic and technical communities through open models inspired by the Open Source movement to bootstrap a technological base while promoting collaborative creative production; to evaluate new technologies notably performance capture, reactive paper using electrophoretic display devices or EPDs, (e.g. e-ink), and existing creative art-oriented open source products which have promise for dynamic art; to evaluate the methodology and the creative and technological outcomes of creative pull itself.

Work description:
The work involves two complete cycles of technology development driven by artistic production using creative pull methods to ensure appropriate functionality. The core technological R&D will create a narrative drawing data-path, a performance animation data-path and technologies specific to creative production, for refinement during production. New types of input device will also be evaluated, to overcome current limitations in the use of computers as artistic tools. CUSTODIEV technologies will be made available on the Web and at a new access centre in Angouleme, France, developed by CNBDI. Creative Pull requires an evaluation phase to refine the technology after use and allowance has been made for this in setting the creative project schedule and limiting it to two iterations. Partners contributions: Glasgow: Develop performance capture data-path; involves model fitting, recasting for in-betweening. Develop open production tools: storyboard abd animatic tools; establish stable platforms for internet-mediated production.
LUC: Develop drawn input data-path for narrative drawing; involves model sheet management, high-level in-betweening and non photo-realistic rendering of photographic material.
CNBDI: Establish virtual and physical centres, forum and model for engagement with creative and technical communities via the Web. Develop photoreal models and virtual sets for creative production, and Nonphotorealistic processes for stylization.SIRIOL: develop nonphotorealistic styles from photorealistic input and use these in creative production. Use and evaluate open production model by creative pull. Lead evaluations with user group.
Androme: build drivers to bridge from EPD pads to PC operating systems; build drawing and photograph display management for EPD input; build core inbetweenerPhilips04/04/2002 Develop EPD system as EPD pad through three cycles of development. This involves developing the EPD output function and stylus-based input for simulating drawing.

Milestones:
M1: Establishment of Artistic & Technological Virtual Forum (month 6);
M2: Non photo-realistic Animation style guide; first EPD prototypes (month 12);
M3: Prototype software tools; establishment of physical centre (month 18);
M4: Completion of first creative pull projects; final creative production data-paths; final technology components (month 23);
M5; Completion of evaluated creative pull projects and implementation planning (completion of project, month 30).
