Network for Agile Methodologies Experience

Ziel

The goal of the proposed project is the creation of a network of excellence to build a research roadmap and to define and start populating an experience framework in XP and other AMs, as the essential prerequisite of systematic R&D activities in the 6th EU Research Funding Framework. As a by-product of these two goals, stronger links will be established among researchers, developers, managers, and consultants working on XP and AMs, building a significant critical mass on XP and AMs within Europe. The project is organized in two major phases: the definition of the research roadmap and the establishment of the empirical framework. Throughout the project there are various dissemination activities toward associate partners, other networks, and the general public.

Objectives:
The aim of the proposed project is the creation of a network of excellence to build a research roadmap and to formalise and exchange experience in XP and other AMs, as the essential prerequisite of systematic R&D activities in the 6th EU funding framework.

The project has three objectives:
(a) the creation of a well understood and widely accepted research roadmap for XP and AMs;
(b) the development of a common experience framework for future R&D in XP and AMs;
(c) strengthening the existing and establish new strong links among the European scientists, developers, and managers working on XP and AMs.

The objectives will be pursued putting together critical mass from the Academia and the Industry, placing specific attention also to the world of consultants, who have been among the early promoters of XP and AMs.

Work description:
As a consequence of the three objectives, the network activities will be organized in three, partially overlapped phases:
(a) Creation of a research roadmap for XP: during this phase network participants and their associate partners will identify the lines for the future research in XP and AMs;
(b) Definition and initial population of an XP and AMs experience framework: during this phase the essential aspects of any XP and AM experience will be identified, so that in the future it will be possible to compare research and development initiatives in XP and AMs;
(c) Dissemination among network associate partners and the general public.

A series of workshops with a large number of "associate partners" will help identifying core areas for future research and the key elements for the experience framework. In particular, the following aspects will be analysed in depth, given their business and technical relevance:
- value added by each XP and AMs practice;
- relationships among XP, AMs, and Open Software Development;
- roles and interactions between developers, managers, and customers;
- pair programming;
- testing and quality assurance.

The network will take advantage of existing EU network projects. In particular, it is foreseen a significant interaction with the networks ESERNET and CBSE-net. ESERNET will provide NAME a "horizontal" competence in experimentation, while NAME will supply ESERNET the opportunity for "vertical," deep empirical studies in XP and AMs. XP and AMs have been developed by leading practitioners of the OO and CB community, such as Kent Beck. CBSE-net and NAME will try to go one step further, studying the inter-relationships between Component Based development and XP and AMs. All the key reports will be open to the general public and available through the web, to ensure the maximum exposure and fallback of the results of the project.

Milestones:
Milestone 1. Month 4: collection of open issues from associate partners;
Milestone 2. Month 6: production of the common research roadmap;
Milestone 3. Month 7: internal dissemination among associate partner on the research roadmap;
Milestone 4. Month 10: extraction of the experience from the associate partners;
Milestone 5. Month 11: development of the common experience framework;
Milestone 6. Month 12: final report and internal + external dissemination on the final results.
