Efficient design incorporating fundamental improvements for control and integrated optimisation

Obiettivo

The present energy use of European Buildings is higher than it could be, given the recent developments in control techniques. Optimisation and integration of building control strategies could save huge amounts of energy at European scale, while preserving or improving on present standards of comfort.
The EDIFICIO research project proposed here, has the goal to develop innovative, adaptive, integrated control systems to improve the overall performance of the energy management systems and the indoor comfort in buildings.
This is achieved by using Soft Computing Techniques (SCT), specially Fuzzy Logic (FL), Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) and Genetic Algorithms (GAs).
Being the result of recent developments in computer science these techniques, already adopted in other industrial processes, are widely recognised to open new possibilities for the solution of integrated complex and adaptive control problems, such as are encountered in the building energy sector. They enable to carry out multi-functional actions directed to integrate energy plants with envelope components and human presence by means of reliable and low-cost control components.
The main problem addressed is integrated smart control of the different building functions:
- lighting (artificial and natural);
- heating and cooling;
- indoor air quality and ventilation.
In the proposed project new integrated and adaptive control strategies for these building functions, based on SCT techniques, will be developed, integrated and tested, also in real building with real installation.
The expected benefits from these strategies will be demonstrated and quantified in terms of:
- larger energy saving, by increasing efficiency of BEMS.
- higher indoor comfort, by combining the control actions with the humanpresence.
The project will be carried out by a team of leading institutes and companies in this field (rational use of energy and renewable energy, control sector, building automation, microelectronics), ensuring both a high scientific level for the applications of these new techniques and a broad platform for the implementation of the project results in the commercial building and control sectors.
The main economic and scientific benefits the project will introduce are:
- innovation and emciency in building energy management;
- A new methodology for industries willing to adapt predictive controls forthe overall management of the building services.
- Prospects of commercialisation of hardware/software products and selling oflicences.
The products themselves of the project will be:
- a set of standard and operating conditions to implement the new adaptivecontrols in buildings;
- a prototype of the integrated control system;
- a fully dedicated Fuzzy Logic Processor implementating the new adaptivecontrol modules;
- a prototype of a building management network applying the Neural-Fuzzyintegrated controllers;
- results and methodology of experimental test in occupied buildings withreal installation.
