Integrated control strategies for improving energy management and comfortin new and existing buildings

Obiettivo

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
To develop a generic framework for integrating control strategies in order to improve energy management as well as indoor comfort in non-domestic buildings To develop a set of smart control schemes compatible with this generic framework.
To develop prototypes of controllers using this integrated approach To validate the advantages of this approach in simulation and to prepare for a future demonstration in occupied buildings.
TECHNICAL APPROACH
A generic approach will be developed for describing the methodologies for integrating the wide variety of controlled systems found in buildings. A number of common functionalities will be defined for issues including the coordination of control strategies, conflict resolution, demand estimation and capacity limiting.
Specific strategy modules will be developed at the services, plant and zonal levels of a building. A set of exemplar systems will be chosen to represent a range of different challenges and complexities in systems integration. The generic framework will be used to develop the three major supervisory levels in which aspects specific to the different control levels are embedded. The development of these modules will be performed in two phases: the first phase will concentrate on methods for integrating current state-of-the-art controls, this is aimed at near-market application in existing buildings; the second phase will expand the methods to encompass information available from future systems where techniques such as advanced fault detection will be in operation.
Testing will initially be performed using simulation of both the individual level controllers and a fully integrated controller. Further testing will be performed in emulation, this involves connecting the controller hardware through suitable interfaces to a computer based building simulator and testing the hardware as if it were attached to a real building. Comparisons will be made between conventional and integrated controls to illustrate the benefits available from co-ordinated control.
EXPECTED ACHIEVEMENTS
Generic methods for integrating diverse systems that will simplify the task and therefore lower the cost of systems integration and ensure that comprehensive validation of the integrated systems can be performed. The ability to coherently control the different technical systems (HVAC systems, blinds, lights)
Optimisation of energy use and energy cost taking into account coherently the two main control levels, zones and plant of one building.
The ability to interchange products from different manufacturers without losing this coherent approach.
The co-operation of the relevant standardisation committees to exploit the results and eventual incorporation of the methodology within suitable standards.
