Use of mesoporous materials for deep catalytic conversion of heavy oils by residue cracking and hydrocracking

Obiettivo

Objectives

The aim of the programme is to ensure the continued availability of acceptable transport fuels by improving the inter-conversion of hydrocarbons. This aim should be reached by determining practical solutions to the development of cracking and hydrocracking catalysts by using mesoporous materials of the M41S family for deeper catalytic conversion of heavy oils into lighter fractions.

The objective is to synthesize and thoroughly characterize such materials and to test them for stability and catalytic performance. The catalytic performance of these materials will be measured both in terms of producing the desired activity and selectivity and in terms of deactivation profiles. Particular attention will be given to factors which influence the stability or stabilization of the materials used during steaming and regeneration procedures.

Technical Approach

In the laboratory scale preparation of technically viable forms of catalysts it will be ensured that the working catalyst system for the deep catalytic conversion of heavy oil fractions (residues) manifests acceptable cracking behaviour. To this end the following investigations will be carried out: specific preparation of the catalyst components used and their comprehensive physico-chemical characterization, including XRD, adsorption and acidity measurements, various thermal techniques, solid-state NMR, electron microscopy, etc.

Tests will be carried out to ascertain the aptitude of metal loaded, extra-large pore materials as catalyst components for hydrocracking catalysts with particular attention given to the role of the support, the condition of the metal loading and the influence of the interaction of metal-support on catalytic activity and selectivity. The project includes optimization studies on thermal, hydrothermal and long-term stability of catalysts and their regenerability.

Finally, working catalyst systems will be tested on a lab scale and in pilot plants for fluid catalytic cracking and hydrocracking under relevant working conditions using heavy oil feedstock.

Expected Achievements and Exploitation

The project has an essential function for the scientific and technological development in Europe with the objective to improve feedstock utilization, reduce energy requirements and avoid or reduce environmental problems. In line with this claim it is attempted to establish a link between fundamental research and commercial application-related research on the chemical industry. The research results emerging from this project will be published in a proper way, after consultation with potential users.
